He joined the organization in 1998 as Director of Lodging and was promoted in 2010 to Vice President of Hospitality, Sales, and Marketing.

In this executive role, Munro oversaw more than ten departments and led a workforce of over 100 employees. During his first decade at Sea Pines, he was directly responsible for food and beverage operations, elevating service standards across the resort. His leadership extended to lodging operations, vacation rental management, and large-scale marketing initiatives, all supported by an annual budget exceeding $2 million.

Munro played a critical role in managing a portfolio of more than 400 vacation rentals and in implementing innovative marketing strategies that drove consistent revenue growth. His contributions were instrumental in more than $100 million in resort facility enhancements, ensuring Sea Pines remained competitive and relevant in a rapidly evolving hospitality landscape.

Within the Sea Pines Resort, Munro provided executive oversight of The Inn and Club at Harbour Town. He reviewed and guided operational reporting across all departments, including front desk, concierge, housekeeping, maintenance, and food and beverage.

Under his leadership, the Inn achieved high occupancy levels and strong average daily rates while maintaining exceptional guest satisfaction. The property earned a perfect five out of five rating from more than 700 Tripadvisor reviews and consistently ranked as the number one hotel on Hilton Head Island. The Inn holds a Forbes Four-Star and AAA Four-Diamond designation and was recognized by U.S. News and World Report in 2023 as the number five hotel in the United States and the number two hotel in South Carolina.

Vacation Rentals and Owner Relations

Munro was deeply involved in the vacation home and villa rental business, maintaining close collaboration with property management teams and rental property owners. He supported business development through property recruitment and enrollment, strengthening owner relationships while expanding the resort’s rental inventory.

Marketing Strategy and Innovation

Marketing and brand development have been central to Munro’s success. He managed and optimized a marketing budget exceeding $2 million annually, working closely with digital agencies and public relations firms. He led the development of a comprehensive resort-wide marketing strategy that strengthened brand visibility and demand.

Munro also oversaw the creation of a custom, fully integrated in-house booking engine supporting more than 400 vacation rentals and three golf courses. He later joined The Club Group, where he spent nine years managing operations for a private residential club. His responsibilities included reservations, food and beverage, maintenance, and housekeeping. During this time, he personally enrolled more than 150 homes and villas into a rental program and managed multiple operational divisions.

Munro’s leadership has been recognized with the South Carolina Hotelier of the Year award from the South Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association. He serves as a board member of the American Hotel and Lodging Association and participates in several tourism and accommodations committees in South Carolina.

Outside of his professional career, John Munro values family life. He has been married to his wife, Michele, for 35 years, and they have one daughter, Haley, who holds a degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management from the University of South Carolina and currently works for Omni Resorts.
